FINE AND RARE STAFFORDSHIRE FIGURE

BENJAMIN FRANKLIN

Much sort after figure of the Statesman Benjamin Franklin, stands on a titled 'D' shape base.  Wearing a cobalt blue under-glaze coat over a beautifully painted sprig waistcoat and black striped knee breeches, he holds a scroll in his right hand and tricorn hat in his left.  The source for this figure is almost certainly the statue erected in Boston on September 17th 1856, an illustration of which appeared in The Illustrated London News a month later on 25th October.  Although not identical, this figure bears a remarkable resemblance.  Condition is excellent with no damage or restoration.  A fleck of 'in the making' black on his chin and usual crazing.  A rare opportunity to add a great figure to your collection.

Height 14 inch.  Circa 1860.

Referenced in every notable work including;

P.D.G. Pugh, Page B199.  Color Plate page B188.

Garibaldi the hero of Italian Independence.

Giuseppe Garibaldi and the 'Red Shirts' were the heroes of Italian independence.  Feted in England when he visited in 1864, capturing the imagination of the population.

Many figures were produced celebrating this popular hero, and we are pleased to offer this, probably the best of all the figures.  One of the most complex and expensive figures made by Parr and Kent, it features on the front cover of P.D. Gordon Pugh's definitive reference work on Staffordshire Figures.

In excellent condition, beautifully modeled with crisp detail.  Colour and gilding good. Circa 1860.  Height 9 inch.

Originally performed at the Adelphi Theater, London the 'New and Gorgeous Serio-Comic Indian Burletta Spectacle' called 'The Elephant of Siam or The Fire Fiend' was purchased by Wombwell's Menagerie in 1830.  During the course of the action the elephant wrenches the bars from Prince Almansor's window and the prince slides down the elephants trunk to safety, this is the scene captured in this delightful figure.  Condition is excellent, a little very paint flaking and wear to the soft gilt.  A very rare chance to add to your theatrical or circus figure collection.
