FINE AND RARE STAFFORDSHIRE FIGURE
BENJAMIN FRANKLIN
Much sort after figure of the Statesman Benjamin Franklin, stands on a titled 'D' shape base. Wearing a cobalt blue under-glaze coat over a beautifully painted sprig waistcoat and black striped knee breeches, he holds a scroll in his right hand and tricorn hat in his left. The source for this figure is almost certainly the statue erected in Boston on September 17th 1856, an illustration of which appeared in The Illustrated London News a month later on 25th October. Although not identical, this figure bears a remarkable resemblance. Condition is excellent with no damage or restoration. A fleck of 'in the making' black on his chin and usual crazing. A rare opportunity to add a great figure to your collection.
Height 14 inch. Circa 1860.
