MAZEPPA TIED TO A ZEBRA

A rare Astley's Amphitheatre figure of great colour and in excellent condition, with no chips, cracks or restorations, just a little normal glaze crazing and tiny amount of paint flaking.  Mazeppa, sparsely clad in a bright orange cloth (only just preserving his modesty!) is bound to the back of the 'untamed' zebra pursued by three wolves before a bridge and tree, the oval base modeled with a stream and outlined in soft gilt.   Depicting Ivan Stepanovich Mazeppa (1644 - 1709) who was caught making love to a nobleman's wife and as punishment was tied to the back of a wild horse.  The horse galloped through the forest until it dropped dead from exhaustion, whereupon Mazeppa was rescued by Ukrainian peasants and became a commander of Cossacks.  His romantic story was made into a novel by Voltaire and a poem by Byron before being adapted for the stage by H. H. Milner.  Performed first at The Old Vic in 1823 and then Astley's Amphitheatre from 1831 with great success.   Height 14 inch.  Circa 1848

'EMPRESS EUGENIE
and the INFANT PRINCE IMPERIAL'

The inspiration for this figure was an illustration in 'Cassell's Illustrated Family Paper' of 26thJuly 1856.  The Empress sits holding her infant son.  Tragedy struck 23 years later when the Prince Imperial was killed in the Anglo Zulu War of 1879.  At the time there was much sympathy for Empress Eugenie, widowed and living in exile in England and this figure was re-issued with a black title.  This figure is an original 1856.  Height 8 inch.
