Very Rare Black Forest Primitive Picture Clock

~ Lovely Original Condition ~

Very unusual 30hr wall clock from the Black Forest region of Germany. The dial surround is very primitive and decorative - the design is pressed into the sheet metal probably from a carved wood pattern. The dial itself is enameled and the frame is gesso - lacquered black and highlighted with gilt which is now nicely worn. The original hands finish of the dial.

The movement is a typical Black Forest movement from the second half of the 19th century - wooden plates, steel shafts and brass wheels. The movement strikes a gong on the hour - Click here to hear the strike. The side panels are missing but otherwise the movement is complete.

Condition is very original and good. The movement is clean and running - although please don't expect good time keeping and reliability from this little movement! The strike is noisy as the gear train is worn as usual with these movements - you probably heard it in the movie above! The frame of the clock is chipped and worn which really lends this piece character. The dial and surround are in very good condition - the dial has no cracks or chips and there is just the slightest amount of paint loss to the surround.

This clock would add the finishing touch to a mediaeval or gothic country look - or just great to have a rare and unusual clock.

Very charming and unusual find - from local farm sale.

Dimensions of the frame are 13 3/4" high, 12 1/4" wide.

 Ansonia Cast Iron Mantle Clock

~ nice original condition ~

Faux marble mantle clock by Ansonia New York. Has the typical large Ansonia movement which is clean and running. The pendulum is not original but the clock keeps time with it. The clock strikes half hourly on a coiled gong.

The case is a slightly gothic design - with gilt painted rams heads. The dial is the better quality version with enamel chapter ring and pressed brass egg and dart surround. The bezel is pressed brass. The case is adorned with a faux variegated green marble panels.

Condition is very good. As usual with cast iron cases the enamel is chipped along the edges and some of the gilt paint has chipped on the rams noses and the gilt feet. The iron has taken a pleasing brown patina where the enamel is chipped. I think the gilt adornments have been repainted some years ago as the color is surprisingly fresh.

An ideal accent for your shabby chateaux, gothic pile or simply something different for your office or den.

Superb Japy Freres Marble Mantle Clock

~Circa 1870~

This is a French marble mantle clock of good quality. The case is made of sculpture quality black marble rather than the usual blackened slate. The corners are carved from very pretty pink and orange variegated marble into a double ogive shape. The case is heavy hence the high shipping cost - but well worth the extra effort

The movement is by Japy Freres and is of the usual high quality from this maker. It is clean and running.

click to enlarge English Mahogany Mantle Clock.
The movement in this clock is very high quality and a true English movement rather then the usual German derived. A heavy brass bezel fitted with convex bevelled glass covers the high quality engraved brass dial. The case is mahogany veneer with inlay. I don't think the beading along the bottom of the case is original but it doesn't make any difference - this is a fine looking clock.
Fully restored in our workshops and fully working. circa 1930.
