~ Charles X style, circa 1840 ~ by Lainé à Paris Good original condition. Sumptuous Rosewood veneer, inlaid with marquetry and stringing. The clock is typical of the classical style - lightened with the French taste for floral decoration. The floral marquetry is reflected in the fine quality cast brass and gilded dial surround and a small rococo touch to the pendulum bob with acanthus leaves and vacant cartouche. The dial has an engine turned finish and is silvered and engraved with the letters. An interesting feature is the upper pendulum which is cast with a scene of two Romans holding a dog - we can not find a reference for this. The movement is of high quality and strikes the hours and halves on a bell Click here to Hear the Clock Striking. It is in good un-restored clean working order and keeps good time. The clock is in generally good un-restored condition - A few minor faults as you would expect with a clock of this age. The dial has two small fatigue cracks which you can see in the pictures - due to the brass becoming brittle with age. The movement and the dial are stamped with the serial number 999. There are some minor veneer losses and back cover is missing - don't let any of this put you off - this is a fabulous piece. Click to Watch the clock running. Dimensions: Height 19 1/4", Width 10 1/4" Depth 5 3/4" |

8 day duration ~ Alfred Smith - Huddersfield, Yorkshire ~ Impressive clock - with matched mahogany veneers, rosewood inlay and stringing. The door, sides of the case and the plinth central panel are oak. Bobbin turned mahogany hood pillars and the scroll cut top to the trunk door finish of this lovely case which has mellowed to a rich patina giving a most satisfying effect. The
dial has a convex center with fancy shell spandrels and the arch is
painted with a scene of "Dog Rescue" - a subject popular with
the Victorians. Under the dogs foot is a barely visible snakes head - the
dog has rescued the child from the snake and is now waiting for his master
to arrive. Have a look at the
enlarged pictures for your self. A plate engraved with the same
subject exists - this is entitled "The Deliverer" and dated
1851. It is also suggested in the same source that the dog in the image is
"Bashaw" a Newfoundland who The dial is fitted with subsidiary seconds and calendar dials. See the clock running here. The movement is a good quality 8-day movement which strikes the hours on a bell. Click here to hear the strike. Condition is excellent - we have cleaned the movement and replaced the gut lines. Alfred Smith is listed in Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World' Vol 2 by Brian Loomes as born 1828 and working 1871. This clock dates from around 1860-1870. Condition of this clock is very good. The movement has been cleaned and is in good working order - there is evidence of some old repairs/bushing etc as you would expect. The case is in good original condition and has its original feet and back board. There are only some minor veneer loss/replacements, and as usual the front of the plinth has a crack where the carcass has moved slightly - you can see this in the pictures. Click to see more. by Japy Freres Japy Freres is perhaps the most well known and productive of the French clockmakers - here we have a fine example of their work. Very much a development of the Louise XV style, this clock features flowing rococo curves, 'C' scrolls, floral decoration, and fret work giving the design delicacy and lightness. The Case is well cast in brass and it is of considerable weight. There is a real sharpness to the casting which again demonstrates the quality of this piece. The Movement is clean and running and strikes a bell on the hours and halves, click here to hear the strike. The Candelabra are complete with the sconces ready for your next dinner party! The condition of the Case is very good - as you would expect the gilding is worn and we have brightened it with a little gilt wax. There is an old repair to the top of one candelabra - it is barely noticeable. Some of the candelabra arms are very slightly distorted - this only adds to the charm of the piece - have a look at the enlarged pictures here. A beautiful addition to the home of a discerning art collector - circa 1890 Dimensions: Height: 22 1/4, Width 12 3/4", Depth 6". |

~ Victorian Circa 1890 ~ This is a wonderful Victorian French clock and candelabra by the celebrated maker S Marti et Cie. The case and the candelabra are well cast in heavy brass, there is considerable weight in this piece but this is belied by the light and flowing elegance of the design. The style is typically Rococo with floral swags and open cartouches. The gilt is quite worn and has been gilt waxed which gives it a real soft shabby chateaux look, worn edges show a warm patination showing through. The movement is clean and running - and includes the original pendulum with matching serial number. The movement strikes half hourly on a bell - Click here to hear the movement. The candelabra are complete with the sconces and the two snuffers which sit in the center as finials when not in use. The gilt is worn and and has a rich color - this piece definitely does look old! A great piece for your gothic castle, dinning room or add style to your office or board room Very special piece - circa 1890 The clock is 18" high, 4
3/4" deep, and 10 1/2" wide. |

Very
attractive oak case with flame mahogany and rosewood inlay. Most of the
front of the case is veneered in flame mahogany with rosewood. The door and
the center of the plinth are oak. Carved swan-neck
pediment to the hood and bobbin-turned pillars in mahogany. The dial is delightfully painted with hunting scenes - the master is seen in the arch following a pair of hounds with the fox disappearing into the distance. The spandrels are painted with individual hounds generally having fun. The original gilt brass hands add the finishing touch to the dial. John Galloway is listed as working between 1850 and 1870 in Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World' Vol 2 by Brian Loomes. We date the clock around 1850 to 1860 based on its style. The movement is 8 day in duration and strikes a bell on the hour. The dial is fitted with a seconds and calendar subsidiary dials - the calendar is inoperable Click to hear the movement strike Condition is very good and original. The movement has been cleaned by our clockmaker and is running and keeping good time. The case has had some minor work in the past. In common with most country clocks the back feet have been replaced because of the effects of damp, similarly the bottom quarter of the back board has been reconstructed. The work is strong and neat and does not detract from this piece. As you would expect a few pieces of veneer have been replaced and there are some minor marks - you can see in the enlarged images. The trunk door has a repair - invisible from the front - the door has been glued and clamped back together and has some brass strapping on the reverse to reinforce the repair. The repair does not detract in anyway from this piece. Lots of pictures
