~ Victorian Circa 1890 ~ This is a wonderful Victorian French clock and candelabra by the celebrated maker S Marti et Cie. The case and the candelabra are well cast in heavy brass, there is considerable weight in this piece but this is belied by the light and flowing elegance of the design. The style is typically Rococo with floral swags and open cartouches. The gilt is quite worn and has been gilt waxed which gives it a real soft shabby chateaux look, worn edges show a warm patination showing through. The movement is clean and running - and includes the original pendulum with matching serial number. The movement strikes half hourly on a bell - Click here to hear the movement. The candelabra are complete with the sconces and the two snuffers which sit in the center as finials when not in use. The gilt is worn and and has a rich color - this piece definitely does look old!
