Majestic and Very Large Gilt Brass Clock Set, Athena.

A fine quality and very large antique French clock set, beautifully made in finely gilded bronze/brass and featuring the Greek goddess Athena. The original heavy gild is in excellent condition, clean and bright. It is Classical Louis XVI in style, the clock case is supported on a break front base on a single short column with ornate lions to each side providing additional support. Lions are beautifully modelled, holding banners in their mouths which are draped across the front of the clock. There are also laurel swags and wreaths, a symbol of victory. The top of the clock has a large and elaborate scroll form with a scallop shell niche upon which stands Athena, goddess of war and wisdom. She is classically modelled wearing full armour and holding shield and spear. Candelabra are of conforming style with elaborate 6 branches, three at one height and 3 slightly lower height. 

The dial is also gilded bronze, mounted with 12 individual enamel cartouches.

The French movement is of the highest quality and features rack striking and pin-pallet escapement. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is a replacement. It runs for 8 days on one wind and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. Click the video clip below to hear the bell and watch the clock running!

Condition of the case is excellent with clean and bright finish and there are no losses. There is some very minor wear to the original gilding on the high spots, some very minor discolouration or tarnish. Candelabra are slightly distorted. One candelabra base is slightly twisted but this appears to be from new. The dial is also excellent with just some very minor chipping around the cartouches, no major scratches or cracks.

Complete with pendulum, bell and a suitable key. Full setting up instructions supplied if required.
