Stunning mahogany veneered early Victorian 8-Day Tallcase in excellent condition. The arched dial is complete with rolling moon (showing the phase of the moon) alternating with ship in full sail, and the spandrels depict girls as the four seasons. Winter is warm and cozy, dressed in a rich red coat with a fur muff and seated in a paneled drawing room with a roaring fire. Spring winds a floral garland around a lamb. Summer has her hay rake and the most delightful spaniel dog frolicking at her feet. Autumn is surrounded by fruit and holds a bunch of grapes. The case is very elegant with corner pillars to the trunk and bobbin turned pillars to the hood. A rich figured mahogany is used for the case which is elegantly proportioned and looks great! Richard Swain is listed as working in Stratford-on-Avon between 1828 and 1842. Ref: Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World Volume 2 by Brian Loomes. Stratford-on-Avon is in Warwickshire and is famous as the birth place of William Shakespeare. The dial is by the well known dial makers William Finnemore & Son and is of very high quality. William Finnemore & Son are listed as working between 1828 and 1836. The movement is in very good condition - it has been completely overhauled in our workshop. It is clean, running, and keeping good time. It is of 8-Day duration and strikes hourly on a bell. The gut line has been replaced by us with real gut. The dial is in lovely condition, we have re-lettered the worn numerals and touched in the painting where necessary - most of the painting is original. The hands are original. One weight is original, one is a replacement, The pendulum is original. Click to hear the clock strike!, Click here to watch the clock run The case is beautiful and very original - rich figured mahogany has been used to create a very chic and elegantly proportioned case. Box wood inlay sets of the mahogany to great effect. There are some very minor losses of veneer, some splitting to the side of the plinth and the veneer on the front of the plinth - as is usually the case with veneered furniture. Two small pieces are missing from between the swan neck pediment - you don't see this from the front of the clock. These are minor defects - this clock looks great! The glass is original. A stunning centerpiece for your Home! Dimensions: Height 88", Width 25 1/2", Depth 10 1/2"
