Massive Gilt Brass Gothic Clock Set

A magnificent and truly colossal antique French clock set dating from around 1880. It is not only tall, it is also boldly proportioned and very heavy, you will require a strong mantle or side table to accommodate this clock set!

The set is heavily modelled in gilded brass which is in excellent original condition. The case is of Gothic design, with mythical creatures and armorial symbols and designed as a pointed arch containing the dial which is modelled as a rose window. It has 4 enamel cartouches mounted behind gilt brass tracery and is complete with blued steel hands. Below the dial the front of the case is fretted which allows a glimpse of the pendulum swinging. The clock is surmounted by a large urn supported by flying buttresses. The candelabra have large bases following the design of the clock above which are urns which are mounted with 7 lights, a centre sconce surrounded by 6 arms, three of which are mounted low and 3 high.

The French movement is of the highest quality and is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully serviced by our clockmaker. Pendulum has been replaced. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a large sonorous bell. Click the movie below to hear the bell and watch the clock running!

Condition of the case is excellent with clean and bright finish with just some wear and discolouration in places, especially to the centre of the candelabra where it looks like the arms have been reattached at some time. The candelabra are sturdy and strong and very slightly off vertical and distorted. There are no major losses, just the tip of one arm is missing where it joins the central column. Dial is in excellent condition with just some slight chipping to the edges of the cartouches.
