 Fantastic Early Victorian Oak Dresser

~ Circa 1840 ~

Beautiful English Oak dresser - absolutely original with glass knobs and brass cup hooks. Original glass. The oak has a wonderful colour as you can see in the pictures below. The door panels are mahogany which adds a lovely contrast to the oak.

Condition is excellent and very original. There are the usual very minor marks etc that one would expect with any antique - there is no restoration or refinishing at all. The timber of the piece has moved over the years causing the usual slight cracking/opening joints - these just prove the age of the piece and are entirely as expected.

English Antique Mahogany Four-Poster Bed

~Circa 1835 ~

Have you ever dreamed of sleeping in an antique four-poster bed?  Now you can be the Lord and Lady of the Manor in your own beautiful example of William IV English Furniture. This bed is Mahogany with a pine sub-structure. The newel posts are beautifully carved with acanthus leaves in the manner typical of this period.

The pine has suffered from woodworm, which though long dead, has been treated - we have remade the stretchers and the slats in beech to the pattern of the old ones. We have carefully extended the length of the bed to enable you to use a modern standard sized mattress (and so your feet don't get cold!) The extension work has been carried out at the rear of the bed so that it is hidden by your drapes and it has been done to a high standard in our own workshop.  We have pictured the bed with temporary drapes to give you an idea of how the bed will look, ready for you to embellish with the drapes of your taste to co-ordinate with your decor.

The bed is 90" high, 83" long, and 60" wide. Takes a 6'5" x 5' mattress

Grace Darling
~ Northumbrian Heroine ~

Delightful pair of oils depicting the celebrated story of Grace Darling. Grace Darling was the daughter of the lighthouse keeper of the Farne Isles. One stormy night a ship was wrecked on the rocks. Grace's Father said it was too dangerous to go to the sailors aid - but Grace persuaded him and together they rowed out to the wreck and saved many lives. The first picture shows the wreck with Grace and her father rowing out from the lighthouse. The second shows the interior of the lighthouse with the sailors being dried and warmed after the incident.  A remarkable record of domestic life in itself, with many charming details.

The Oil paintings are both by J. Wills - on canvas.

They are in beautiful condition having been cleaned by our restorer. One has had some small tears repaired and the other has been relined to strengthen the canvas. They are both in gorgeous original birds eye maple frames and are a good size - dimensions of the pictures are both 33 3/4" x 29" overall

This Remarkable Victorian collection also consists of a Staffordshire Mug, and the book "Grace Darling, the Heroine of the Farne Islands". This is a biography of Grace Darling by Eva Hope and contains several engravings. It was published in 1875 by Adam and Co.

The Staffordshire mug is transfer printed with a scene of Grace rowing out to save the sailors. The famous story of Grace Darling is printed on the reverse of the mug -

"On the seventh night in September,
Off the Northumbrian coast, is sad to relate
Only one half of the ship Forfarshire was there
When from the light of the lighthouse Grace Darling fair
Espies the wreck amid the surf
Twixt the Farne Rock and the Northumbrian turf
She with her sire through the optic glass discern
Twelve of the crew on the vessels stern
But 'Courage, Father' is the daughters plea
'A few may be saved. let us out to sea'
The maiden rows and courageously save
Nine of the twelve from their watery Grave"

The mug is 4 1/4" x 4" excluding handle and the book is 7 1/4" x 5" x 1"

This delightful collection was discovered by us in a local country house sale.
